The prestigious Wycombe Abbey school in High Wycombe has signed an agreement to open its second international school in China.

Following the success of its international school in Changzhou, Wycombe Abbey has confirmed it will open a £95 million boarding school in Hengqin Special Area, Zhuhai City, in September 2019.

Wycombe Abbey International School Hengqin will offer the national curriculum of England and Wales for more than 1,000 pupils from pre prep age through to the end of secondary school.

Head teacher at Wycombe Abbey, Rhiannon Wilkinson, said: “After enjoying the impressive growth and success of Wycombe Abbey International School, Changzhou, over the past year, it is wonderful that we can already look forward to the opening of a second school in China.

“I am sure that the students in Hengqin will flourish with the introduction of our unique boarding environment, British curriculum and Chinese language and culture courses.”

The school is expected to open on September 1, 2019 to mark the 20th anniversary of the region of Macau’s return to China.

According to Wycombe Abbey the new school will “increase opportunities” for its High Wycombe pupils, and teachers will be able to visit the international centres for “professional development”.

International director at Wycombe Abbey, Sara Brazendale, said: “Pupils will have the opportunity to interact with WAIS students on global projects which help to raise awareness of and improve cross cultural communication a direct way. A skill vital in an interconnected world.”

“Wycombe Abbey also receives an income stream from WAIS that directly supports bursaries and other capital projects in High Wycombe.”

The new campus will have a 700-seat theatre, a black box theatre music and art area, as well as a specialised science lab, interactive libraries and indoor swimming pool.

A stand-along kindergarten campus also forms part of the new development.
