Two rugby legends helped raise thousands of pounds for charity at a special sporting lunch at Adams Park.

Guests of honour Willie John McBride and Phil Bennett OBE joined the Rotary Club of High Wycombe for its 11th annual sporting lunch at the home of Wycombe Wanderers, along with more than 200 others.

With the help of the compere Ian Richards the legendary pair told tales about the 1974 British Lions tour to South Africa.

They talked about how rugby has changed in forty years as in those days the coach was what transported the players to the ground and the players were notified of their selection by letter rather than through social media.

The special lunch – which was sponsored by Risk Management Security Services – raised more than £9,000 for the Rennie Grove Hospice and the Alzheimer’s Society.

Rennie Grove was chosen in honour of Michael Child, who organised the lunch for many years until he sadly passed away earlier this year.

The president of High Wycombe Rotary Club, Graham Evans, said he was “grateful that these legends gave up their time to help raise such a sum of money for charity”.
