A row over parking on a busy High Wycombe road has been reignited amid claims the situation is “getting worse” – but a nursery manager has hit back at a suggestion that parents are responsible for the problem.

Earlier this year, Lane End Road resident Andy Pocock complained about the “dangerous” situation outside Sandcastle Day Nursery and blamed parents for stopping on pavements, in residents’ driveways and on double yellow lines.

Although Mark Shaw, deputy leader and transport chief at Bucks County Council, said he was aware of the issue and additional visits would be made as part of a regular patrol route, Mr Pocock now says the parking issues are no better.

He said: “The situation is actually getting worse. On Thursday, my wife was almost involved in an accident because cars are parked three-abreast. It is so dangerous. And the nursery have stopped putting cones out the front as well now.”

Francesca Smalley, managing director at the nursery, said she is now having to pay for new traffic cones out of her own pocket because they keep getting stolen said parents are not entirely to blame for the parking situation.

She added: “My families are not the only users of the paved area outside the nursery gates and therefore will not take responsibility for those other than my families who attend the nursery

“Everyone is concerned about the safety of children and, even though it does appear to be busy with cars during rush hour periods, it doesn't mean children and other pedestrians are in danger.

“Parked cars act like mobile traffic calming measures and slow down the traffic when the children are about.

“Although we would encourage walking to nursery, we acknowledge that it is essential that vehicles are used, by some, due to the distance from home to nursery.

“My families are reminded by parent mail to take care when parking and to ensure that they do not cause inconvenience to local residents and passing pedestrians.”

County councillor for the area, Darren Hayday, who has been working with the day nursery and residents to come up with a solution, said parking problems are an issue around the town, not just near Sandcastle Day Nursery.

He said: “It’s never easy when you have a number of parents dropping off and picking up children from any school or nursery. We have similar problems with parents at nearby Millbrook School.

“Unfortunately there is no short term solution to solving these problems either. There are a serious lack of parking wardens and police to keep the peace and issue tickets where needed.

“Add into the mix the nearby Tesco Express store where customers park just as poorly and illegally -over people’s driveway and on double yellow lines - we have a real mix of angry residents, who are affected.

“I have been in contact with the nursery manager and out of the other parking issues in the area, this is the less complained about problem. The school is the worst, then the Tesco parking and finally the nursery. I do acknowledge it is a problem though.”

Cllr Hayday said is willing to mediate a meeting with residents and the nursery to come up with a solution and urged those affected to email d_hayday@hotmail.com to arrange a meeting.
