A town-wide parade celebrating Wycombe Wanderers promotion to League One will not take place, it has been confirmed – despite calls from fans.

Wanderers players, staff and fans have been on cloud nine since the club got promoted to League One on April 28.

However, some have been left disappointed that there will be no public celebration of their achievement, even though high profile events have been held in the past to celebrate Olympians and Paralympians in the town.

After the success of London 2012, Olympic heroes paraded through High Wycombe and Marlow on an open-top bus as thousands of proud fans looked on and cheered.

In 2016, the district’s Olympic and Paralympic athletes were given a hero’s welcome home in Marlow after the Rio games – but there will be no similar event for Wanderers.

High Wycombe mayor Cllr Brian Pearce attended the club’s last game of the season at Adams Park on Saturday – not as an official representative of Wycombe District Council (WDC) – but said it was a “shame” that nothing has been planned in celebration of their success.

However, a banner has been placed outside the front of the district council offices on Queen Victoria Road, congratulating the club.

Catherine Spalton, a spokesman for the council, said discussions between WDC and the club found that “constraints” they were both working under meant it was not possible to organise a public celebration.

She said: “We’re absolutely thrilled for everyone at Wycombe Wanderers – the managers, the players, the trust and all of the support staff – for their fantastic achievement in being promoted to League One this year. And like the banner on the front of the council office says, they’ve made the town proud.

“We spoke with the club last week about different options for a celebration, but due to the constraints that we were both working under, we mutually agreed that a large scale public event isn’t going to be possible now. We will continue to talk with the club about how we could celebrate the start of their season in League One.”
