It has been confirmed that blue-green algae which is hazardous to people and animals has been found at The Rye in High Wycombe.

Bucks council have told dog-owners and parkgoers being told to avoid the water after the Environmental Agency confirmed the news.

Blue-green algae produce Cyanobacteria toxins which can cause sickness or vomiting, and skin irritations, in humans.

It can also be fatal for domestic pets, livestock, and wild animals.

The council said they have been taking precautionary measures for public safety whilst waiting on the outcome of the Environment Agency’s inspection of the hundred algae clubs in The Dyke.

The Environment Agency advice is to let blue-green algae clear naturally to avoid it breaking up and moving further down river.

Bucks council said: "The change in weather has already reduced the threat but the measures must remain until we are satisfied it’s safe for the public to use the water as normal, so until then, please do take extra care around The Dyke.”
