A NEW street will named after the man who played a central role in saving Marlow's Regatta.

Former Marlow Mayor and Marlow Town Regatta Chairman Jim Campbell, who died in May aged 78, will be honoured as part of a development at Great Marlow School.

It comprises 46 homes, a coach park and sports centre and the new Campbell Road.

Marlow Town Council were asked by Wycombe District Council to suggest a name.

Deputy Mayor Suzanne Brown said: “We asked for the development to be named after Jim Campbell for his enormous contribution to the town.

“It is also very apt as Jim was also a headmaster in his earlier years at St Marys in Maidenhead and he was a Governor at Great Marlow too.

“I am personally delighted as I knew Jim not only as a councillor, chairman of the regatta and President of the British Legion but as a friend.”

Mayor Jocelyn Towns said: “I am delighted that we have been able to organise this, it will keep Jim in the forefront of our minds, he devoted so much time to Marlow and this is a fitting tribute to him.”

Developers Taylor Wimpey spokesman said in a statement: “Marlow Town Council presented a very convincing case for honouring this local community stalwart who devoted so much of his life to furthering Marlow’s good name, and we were only too happy to approve their recommendation.

“We are very much looking forward to unveiling Campbell Road as a special tribute to Jim when our development is completed in 2013.”

The houses have now gone on sale.
