John Gurney
Name: John Gurney
Age: 62
Occupation: Part-time payroll manager & parish councillor.
From: I have lived in Derehams Avenue, Loudwater for 39 years.
Pub: The Derehams Inn, Loudwater
Why do you love it? The landlady and landlord, Margaret and Graham, are the best and treat regulars as part of the family. There is no juke box or fruit machine to distract you from the main objective of drinking. Last but not least it is in easy walking distance to my home.
How long have you been going there? Since moving to Loudwater I have always used the Derehams Inn in preference to any other pub in the area, but me and my wife have been regular customers for the last 14 years.
Where do you sit? I have my usual seat near the bar where I can see everything that is going on.
What’s been your best night or memory from the pub? Tuesday quiz nights are the best nights and always fun, as are the themed New Years Eve parties and the annual three day beer festival at the beginning of July. My best memory is my own 60th birthday party which the pub ensured was a special occasion.
What do you normally drink? I normally drink real ale, as, being a CAMRA pub, there are usually five to choose from.
Any funny stories? There have been loads of amusing incidents over the years including letters from the previous pub dog Shannon to the BFP. The ongoing source of amusement is the resident Automaton who is always dressed for the occasion be it St Patricks Day, Wimbledon or the World Cup.
