The Garibaldi in Bourne End

Pub: The Garibaldi in Bourne End

Wasn’t it threatened with closure recently? Yes but now the community have bought the pub. It’s been here for at least 150 years and it would have been a terrible shame if it had been demolished or turned into a supermarket. I am so proud of all the work they have put in to save it.

Why do you love it? It's a cosy Victorian building and the open fire is always lit when it's cold. It's just like entering your own sitting room. So many people know each other, but we also get walkers, cyclists etc who are made to feel welcome. It's a bit like the old sit-com Cheers, where 'everybody knows your name'.

What do you normally drink? Usually G&T with ice and a slice, but sometimes a nice glass of red wine. I like a nice, spicy Argentinian...so to speak!

Any funny stories? New Year's Eve is always a giggle, as it’s fancy dress. Last year, it was a 60s theme, so I came dressed as a 'fembot' from Austin Powers. My husband geared the outfit up to shoot real laser-beams and smoke. Everyone was in hysterics - except me when hubby put a video of it on YouTube. He was in trouble then.

What’s your best night or memory been from the pub? We had a wicked celebration for the royal wedding, where we all watched the ceremony then celebrated for the rest of the day. We had games for all the children and I made a union-jack Battenburg cake.
