GLENGARRY Glen Ross is not the usual play you would expect to find being performed by a amateur dramatics group.
Filled with foul language and characters who are difficult to like, the play is a far cry from the Gilbert and Sullivan type plays usually performed by local drama groups.
But Fourways have decided to do just this with director Rob Kouyoumdjian guiding the way.
Rob Kouyoumdjian, who lives off Hamilton Road in High Wycombe, said: “It was something I had always wanted to direct.
“I love the film, I love the characters and I love the playwright. I always knew it would be a hard sell as it has so many f words and it is an all male production.
“But it has worked. So many people love the play. I though that this was a great opportunity to try something new.”
The play written by David Mamet debuted in the national theatre in 1983 and was made into an independent film in 1992 starring Al Pacino, Jack Lemmon and Kevin Spacey.
It focuses on four salesmen who are competing against each other in 1980 Chicago. The two who sell the least will be fired.
Rob who has been involved in Fourways for two years is playing salesman Shelley Levene.
He said: “It is one of those roles which is just so unique. The dialogue is great.
“There is some great speeches in it. Shelley is a really desperate man trying to hold things together.
“I don't like him personally. But I think like the others he is also a victim of the system.”
Fourways has presented productions in Wycombe for the past 50 years and past productions include One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and The Graduate.
Rob added: “I think Wycombe doesn't really have enough plays. There are a lot of dance and musicals.
“I don't think there is enough drama about. I think it will be a really good chance for us to put this on.”
Actors are coming from London, Watford and Maidenhead and the group are always looking for more members especially males in their twenties and thirties.
Glengarry Glen Ross is at the Wycombe Swan from February 4 to February 6 at 8pm.
Tickets cost £12 from the box office on 01494512000 or go to www.wycombeswan.co.uk.
