A GROUP of design students have been recognised for their work at an exhibition which showcases the best in UK graduate design.

The students from Buckinghamshire New University won three awards at New Designers which is at London’s Business Design Centre.

As a group the students won New Designers Best Stand Award (Part 1) and in individual categories, Lois Norman won the New Designers British Contract Furnishing Association and Interior Design Association Award, and Tortie Hoare won the BDC New Designer of the Year Award (Part 2).

The class of 2010 was recognised for its “originality, excellence and ingenuity” and awards were presented at the VIP previews on June 30 and July 7.

Dr Andie Robertson, course leader for BA (Hons) Textiles and Surface Design, said: “This is a huge honour for us, we are so pleased, and full credit to everyone who has contributed.

“Our student work says everything about how we teach at Bucks and how we challenge our student designers.

Our graduates make long term contacts in the design arena at the New Designers, and it is an international showcase for our course.

This is our students’ award and it makes all the hard work worthwhile.”

Lois Norman, 21, from Northwich in Cheshire, has won a four-week placement with Brintons Carpets at its London design centre as well as a one-year complimentary membership of the British Contract Furnishing Association.

She said: “It is affirmation from my peers that I am on the right track. As long as I’m designing, drawing and painting, I’ll be happy - it’s what makes me tick.”

The annual New Designers show runs in two parts for two weeks at London’s Business Design Centre, and has nine design zones and two awards evenings.
