Downley man in America as film wins award

A DOWNLEY man was treated like a Hollywood star after being nominated for an award for his role in a short film.

Dominic Kinnaird came runners up in the Best Male Action Performer of the Year in an American awards ceremony for his lead role in Supertramp.

He flew to America to attend the 2010 Action on Film International Film Festival and also the Hollyshorts Festival in Hollywood where films by David Arquette and Kirsten Dunst were showing.

Kinnaird said: “It was fantastic. We were treated like Hollywood stars. It should open a lot of doors.”

Supertramp is directed by Philippe Leone who recently graduated from the National Film and Television School in Beaconsfield.

“I was ecstatic about the nomination,” enthuses Kinnaird. He said: “Runners up was pretty good considering the film that won was made with a much bigger budget.

“Supertramp cost around £10,00 to make. The action scene blew everyone away everywhere we have shown it.”

Kinnaird, who grew up in West Yorkshire but moved to High Wycombe when he was 10, plays Ben, a tramp haunted by his past.

“It was quite challenging for me because I was playing this tramp. He has got a very difficult past which results in anger issues. He turns the other cheek several times until he snaps in this big fight scene.

“It is one of the most violent fight scenes you will ever see.”

He said they filmed the fight scene in one day which is “unusual” but he was able to use his skills as he is training to be an equity registered fight director.

The 34-year-old attended Jackie Palmer stage school with James Cordon and has since worked with other famous faces including Sir Ian Mckellan, Sean Bean and Kelly Osbourne.

He hopes Supertramp will be made into a feature film and is currently in talks about potential financial backing.

He said: “I have continuously played completely different roles. You wouldn't recognise me in Supertramp.

“I don't want to be type-cast.”
