THE Winslow Concert Band under its musical directon, Paul How, entertained audiences with its usual distinctive flair at The Armed Forces Day, held this year for the first time at the Aylesbury Rugby Club on June 25.
The band was on stage for the dramatic flying display, playing Eric Coate’s ‘Dambuster’ March, that well befitted the occasion. Aircraft on display included the RAF’s Spitfire and Hurricane, demonstrating the high degree of manoeuvrability of these iconic WW11, flown with such courage and success during the Battle of Britain by ‘The Few’. The Winslow Concert Band has gained a reputation for captivating audiences with its ‘family friendly’ wide and imaginative repertoire from Glen Miller ‘Big Band Specials’, songs by Tom Jones, Elton John and Andy Williams, music from stage and screen by Rogers and Hammerstein and not least light classics including Viennese waltzes and polkas from the pen of the Strauss family. The next day featured the band in its annual appearance at Waddesdon Manor ‘MAD’ festivities and two weeks earlier, an impromptu ‘Happy Birthday’ for Lord Carrington’s 91st was all in a days playing, when the Band performed at the Bledlow Manor Fete.
Charitable performances are an important part of the band's activities, raising nearly £1000 for Thames Valley Chiltern Air Ambulance last year and for the current year the band has chosen Macmillan Nurses for its charity work. The band is dedicated to the enjoyment of music and new members are always welcome, where enthusiasm and aspiration are regarded equally to grades. It rehearses at Winslow each Thursday evening and those interested should contact Alison on 01525 758 178 or visit www.winslowconcertband.co.uk
