Review: Sandcastles at The Bury, Chesham

AS part of the Chesham Open Air Festival Chesham Theatre Company staged this very funny play. The heavy rain had persisted all day so they were forced to move into the Marquee reserved for the audience and squeeze everyone in. It made for a very intimate atmosphere and made the audience feel part of the action.

The set comprised three beach huts complete with seagull droppings and the audience were asked to imagine it was a fine sunny day.

Such was the acting skills of the cast they were able to perform in shorts and t-shirts and summer dresses and move in and out of the marquee giving no indication of the awful weather.

Competently directed by Paul Eckersall who also had to take on a small part at the last minute the story revolves round the owners of the beach huts and their annual visits where they meet up and renew their friendships. Problems arise when the owners of the middle hut rent it out to a man and his two nieces. The snobbery that ensues when the owners feel they are above the newcomers. Add to this some bolshy ladies who feel the beach should belong to everyone and you have a funny situation.

Chesham Theatre Company can be relied on to offer great entertainment. It was a pity that the terrible weather meant that the audience was not very large but they were vocal in enthusiasm demonstrating that an enjoyable evening was had by all.
