Ayurvedic massage is just one of the treatments on offer at The Runnymede Hotel and Spa
Ayurvedic massage is just one of the treatments on offer at The Runnymede Hotel and Spa

ALTHOUGH the Ayurvedic Body Ritual is a convoluted title, it does exactly what it says on the tin - rebalances mind, body and soul. Or it could just be called Heaven on Earth, if you ask me.

Because the two hour treatment, designed to sweep away the cobwebs and chill out even the most uptight body, really hits the spot.

The ritual, at The Runnymede Hotel and Spa near Windsor, stems from an ancient Hindu system of medicine and is renowned for its healing properties.

It starts with a consultation while having a foot ritual, which is then followed by a full body salt and oil scrub and a wrap - using a variety of blended oils.

It finishes with a therapeutic full body massage using hot stones. Bliss.

The most exciting part of this is the diagnosis.

The masseurs give you a form to fill out first, detailing what kind of person you are. Questions range from what is your skin type, to asking how well you sleep.

And, depending on your answers, the treatments are different.

I was classified as a Vata type, which typically means I suffer from dry skin and am affected by cold, dry weather.

"Although the Ayurvedic Body Ritual is a convoluted title, it does exactly what it says on the tin – rebalances mind, body and soul."

I admitted to feeling anxious at the moment for a variety of reasons, so had a warmth, nourishing therapy to heal me.

The other treatments include the Pitta, for people who suffer from over active minds and bodies and agitation, and the Kapher for people who suffer from dull skin and put on weight easily.

I had actually slept quite badly the night before and was dreading the thought of falling asleep on the bed. How embarrassing it would be if I started to snore.

But actually I was just pleasantly spaced out.

I do confess to walking out the room like a zombie though, as I felt my mind had been zapped of all life. I hadn't felt that relaxed for months, no years. And driving home was pretty perilous.

But I had the best sleep ever that night.

The Runnymede Hotel and Spa, has just launched new treatments and a second double treatment room, designed for two people. It also has a private relaxation lounge with plasma screen and refreshment bar.

Ayurvedic massage costs £95. The Runnymede Hotel and Spa, Windsor Road, Egham. Details 01784 220973 or www.runnymedehotel.com
