THINGS that go bump in the night around Bucks have inspired the latest book from a Prestwood author.
David Kidd-Hewitt, a former contributor to the Bucks Free Press, has just penned Buckinghamshire Stories of the Supernatural, which is out this week.
"On a more light-hearted note, the book also includes the tale of a phantom in the Elephant and Castle pub in Old Amersham, who pinches the bottoms of unsuspecting staff."
The author will also be at the Hell-Fire Caves, West Wycombe, this Saturday, for a book signing.
Featuring a host of spine-tingling tales of apparitions, phantoms, ghost and spectres, David, who has also written Buckinghamshire Tales of Mystery & Murder, says the book will cause, “even hardened sceptics to pause”.
Among the stories included in the book is the terrifying experience of two young men who were pursued through the dark, empty corridors of a derelict hospital in Taplow by a ghost known as The Flincher.
There’s also a chapter devoted to the so-called Green Man of Hughenden, a seven-foot tall green figure that several witnesses claim to have encountered.
Even Denham celebrity Cilla Black gets a mention with her experience of a gentle female ghost, who she claims stood next to her bed on more than one occasion.
There’s also first-hand accounts of the paranormal, including sightings of the ghostly bride, Sukie, who walks through the dark tunnels of the Hell-Fire Caves seeking revenge for her death.
And on a more light-hearted note, the book also includes the tale of a phantom in the Elephant and Castle pub in Old Amersham, who pinches the bottoms of unsuspecting staff.
David will be at a book signing at the Hell-Fire Caves, West Wycombe, on Saturday, October 25, 12pm to 3pm. Buckinghamshire Stories of the Supernatural by David Kidd-Hewitt is published by Countryside Books, priced £8.99. Details: www.countrysidebooks.co.uk
