Spotlight on black culture
Black history and culture will be celebrated with a cycle of nine topical plays, Journeys to Freedom, at Pegasus Theatre this week.
The shows begin on Tuesday, March 25, the anniversary of the Act that abolished slave trading in the British Empire.
Featuring 22 actors aged from six years old to adult, the epic story spans centuries and continents and revolves around a wise storyteller named Buktu. Her tales include those of Anansi the spider from African legend; King Mansa Musa of Timbuktu; Aesop, the black slave who became famous for his animal fables; civil rights activist Malcolm X; and Nelson Mandela.
Journeys To Freedom runs from Tuesday, March 25 to Saturday, March 29, at Pegasus Theatre, Magdalen Road, Oxford. Details and tickets: 01865 722851 or www.pegasustheatre.org.uk
