Beauty and the Beast, Elgiva, Chesham review

VERY well directed by Kirsten-Rebecca Gittins the Chesham Bois Catholic Players' panto was a family affair with Kirsten’s mother stage managing, her two daughters taking part and her father designing posters and programme.

The story unfolded with some superb effects from both lighting and sound and audience participation was there from the start.

Led by Tania Hamberger a beautiful good fairy with her counterpart Amanda Gillespie as Fairy Bovver Boots the bad character everyone loves to boo. Simon Allen played Belle’s sister Smellie a change from the usual role of the dame and Steve Turner gave a fine performance as Belle’s father working the audience with every appearance.

A superb pantomime horse added to the fun along with Nick Gabb. The Town Crier Johnny Schwertzmann gave a credible performance as Carlo the greasy character who wanted to marry Belle and Alex Heath was delightful as Chico. Peter Mack was superb as the Beast and Lucy Brett made a gallant Prince Braveheart.

The lively chorus made it apparent how much they were enjoying the show. The choreography was also by Johnny Schwerzmann and I particularly enjoyed the Fame routine. Credit must go to Evelyn Willment Tina Pearce and Liz Turner for the gorgeous costumes. The many scene changes were slick and the scenery itself was amazing.

This was one of the best pantos I have seen in quite some time.

Beauty and The Beast will be at the Chesham Elgiva on Saturday January 16 and 23 at 1.30pm and 5.30pm, January 17 at 2.30pm and January 22 at 7.30pm.
