On TV you may have seen him wielding his pink foam mallet at contestants – Mallet’s mallet – but off-screen it’s all about Mallet’s palette.

TV presenter and entertainer, Timmy Mallett, is renowned for his vibrant personality and colourful attire, attributes that transfer directly into his lesser known talent for painting.

“I paint every day and inspiration is everywhere,” he says, before joking: “You won’t be surprised to see I adore colour.”

Timmy’s love of painting began when he studied History of Art at Warwick University, however during this time he also began working on the student radio and upon graduating began working at BBC Radio Oxford with art taking somewhat of a backseat.

In 1983 he broke into TV with the show Summer Run on new breakfast channel TV-am. The following year he began presenting Wide Awake Club and later, the spin-off of this, his notorious Wacaday show which was characterised by games such as Mallett’s Mallet, a word-association game in which contestants were hit over the head by his pink foam mallet if they got an answer wrong.

He even took his beloved mallet to a Christmas party in the House of Commons, where he demonstrated its use on the then Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher.

Timmy admits throughout his career he has always gone out of his way to attract attention, but has often given back while doing so: “I loved climbing Sydney Harbour Bridge, and the London to Brighton cycle ride.

“I adored diving the Great Barrier Reef, and driving coast to coast across the states, but I’ve always wanted to do something just a bit bonkers too. Something nobody else has done.”

In more recent years he has appeared on ITV’s I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! as a stand-in judge in 2002 and then later as a contestant in 2008, in which he was the fourth celebrity to be eliminated from the jungle trials.

This Saturday you can see Timmy and his the artwork of Timmy at the Whitewall Galleries in High Wycombe.

He is an accomplished artist in both oil & acrylic, who takes his inspiration from the ever-changing seasons and his many travels across the world.

The exhibition will showcase approximately 20 original paintings inspired by the ever changing seasons, and his various travels.

Area Manager for Whitewall Galleries, Kerrie-Ann Law commented: “We are delighted to welcome Timmy to the gallery.

He is a famously colourful character and we are looking forward to introducing him to collectors – It’s not every day you get to chat about artwork with a household name! I hope our friends in the area will be coming along to meet him, and enjoy this unique occasion.”
