THE daughter of famous biblical artist Stanley Spencer unveiled a carving in memory of her father at a celebratory service.

Unity Spencer's dedication to her father and mother was installed in the church during a special choral evening at Holy Trinity Church in Cookham.

Over 100 people attended last Wednesday to celebrate Spencer's life.

The service marked the fiftieth anniversary of the Stanley Spencer Gallery on Cookham High Street, which opened in 1962.

Spencer fan, Bishop of Chelmsford, Reverend Stephen Cottrell, lead a sermon and said the memorial made by Unity was a reminder of the love that Stanley and Hilda Spencer had for each other.

He spoke about his favourite Spencer piece, Love Letters.

Rev Cottrell said: "There are all sorts of reasons why I love this painting.

"First - and this shows my age - it makes me nostalgic for a bygone era where lovers communicated to each other by post.

"This is a world without mobile phones. There is neither twitter nor text.

"How impoverished is the heart of the generation growing up today, for they will probably never know the ache of anticipation as the postman walks up the drive."
