Pub: The Gate Inn, Bryants Bottom

How long have you been coming here? The Gate has been my local for thirty years. As a youth it was always my dream to live in a country village within walking distance of a good pub, and I achieved that in 1984 when my wife and I moved to Bryants Bottom. I suppose you could call it my Gate-way to a dream.

What do you usually drink? I love Rebellion bitter so I will have a pint or two of that if it is available, if not I will sup Sharp's Doombar.

Where do you usually sit? My wife and I normally use the 'Tap room' bar. It is ideal for country ramblers and their dogs (complete with muddy boots and paws), as well as the regulars. The lounge bar is good when we want a quiet meal, and there are often quiz nights, discos, live bands, and various club meetings in the Function room.

What do you like about it? The Gate Inn is a lovely, old fashioned, country pub dating from the 19th century. Wendy and Graham took over running The Gate eighteen months ago, and they have brought a wonderful ambience to the pub and it has developed into a great place to eat and drink. The beer is always kept well and the food is reasonably priced with a good varied menu, and many additional choices on the chalkboard. The home-made pies are delicious.

Do you think pubs still have a place in today’s society? Well run pubs definitely have a place in today's society, even more so with pubs like The Gate that cater for families. There is nothing children like better on a warm sunny day than to enjoy themselves in The Gate's extensive garden play area, well fenced from the road so their parents can relax with a drink and a meal in the large garden (we certainly did that a lot when our children were young). In our village The Gate was the centre for our 2012 Jubilee celebrations, and many other pubs around the country are similarly the hub for local festivities.

Do you think there is a good pub scene in the Wycombe District? The Chilterns area around Wycombe has a wonderful selection of pubs to choose from. We are extremely lucky to live in an area endowed with so many good pubs, and exceptionally lucky to live within walking distance of one of the best.

Is The Gate your local? What do you love about it?
