A singer from South Bucks who moved to LA to pursue her dream has become the first musician to release a single through social media app Snapchat.

Laura Saggers, who lived in Chesham before moving to the USA, said she “died of excitement” and was “tickled pink with joy” when Snapchat asked her if she wanted to feature in their new music series ‘Under the Ghost’ with her single Summer Fling.

Every week for the past couple of months, Snapchat, which has over 100 million users, has been inviting new artists to perform one song, releasing it to their user base through their news feed page.

The former Beaconsfield High School pupil, who previously released a song about online payment system Bitcoin, describes herself as a huge technology nerd who couldn’t pass up the opportunity to release her single with Snapchat.

She said: “Snapchat work very quickly and once my feature was confirmed I had only a couple of weeks to prepare. My industry partner in crime, the incredible director Ty Leisher, who directs all my videos and I sat in our little coffee shop the next day and hashed out a plan of action and just went for it.

“I knew it was far too big an opportunity to waste and so I called in all my favours from everyone I have met and I am blown away at what we were able to achieve in such a short space of time. I’m so incredibly grateful to everyone who pitched in to help.”

The singer describes her new single, which talks of a seemingly short-lived summer romance, as a “super fun, folk pop catchy tune”.

She said: “It’s definitely something everyone can sing along to. A couple of years ago I came back to England to my good friend's wedding and I met a lovely chap there and just got caught up in the moment,  fell in love and spent the rest of my trip with him.

“Nothing like that had ever happened to me and it was so unexpected but then the week ended and I got on a plane and left for Hawaii and that was that.

“I was instantly inspired to write about the amazing trip I had had and being in Hawaii I guess it sparked off that Hawaiian vibe which you can hear throughout the song. Everything I write about in the song is 100% accurate which I hope allows the audience to relate to the lyrics.”

The self-managed musician, who writes all her own music and plays the keytar and piano, has been passionate about performing since she was a little girl but admits that singing didn’t come naturally to her.

“Singing has always been a huge passion for me, I remember dragging my mum to see The Little Mermaid over and over again when it first came out in 1989 and I memorised the words of all the songs before it was even out of the cinema, however singing in tune didn't actually come naturally to me.

“I found it really difficult to pitch my voice with to my ear and not coming from a really musical family, we all just presumed I wasn't very good.

“When I was 18 I decided to take singing lessons and learnt how to pitch my voice and have been perfecting my craft ever since. Now I live in Los Angeles and get paid to do it.  It is an incredible dream come true.”

The “cheeky, fun, honest, folk-pop, singer/songwriter” who performs regularly at clubs in Santa Monica and hopes to start booking shows outside of LA hopes to inspire people with her music.

She said: “The whole point for me in making music is to inspire at least one other person.  Musicians sometimes forget it isn't about trying to get everybody to love you, it is really just about making a lasting impression that when someone listens to what you have created, they are able to take away something and make it personal to them.

“If I manage to achieve that then I feel like I have done a good job.”
