Freddy Kempf (piano) at Jordans Music Club Summer Festival
Their third Beethoven work this season, one of the shortest of his piano sonatas, has just two movements, the second consisting of eight varied statements of one of the composer's loveliest themes. It is followed by Schubert's A major sonata, composed in the final weeks of his life, which has a wonderfully simple slow movement interrupted by a despairing outburst, typical of many of his late slow movements. The rondo finale is one of Schubert's finest with a particularly attractive main melody. Tchaikovsky's piano music comprises mainly short pieces; one exception is the Grande Sonata in four movements, often recorded but rarely heard live. Its movements are linked by a common theme, the second a long lyrical andante while the galloping finale makes considerable demands on the player's virtuosity. Freddy Kempf, known to audiences worldwide as an explosive and physical performer not afraid to take risks, is also acknowledged to be a profoundly musical artist. Call 01923 282943. Tickets: £20 (£10 child).
