KYE Gibbon started making music as a hobby- never expecting it to get in the charts. This year three of the singles he has released with Matt Robson-Scott as production duo Gorgon City have charted in the top 40 and this week they released their début album. Not bad for a High Wycombe DJ who left college with one and a half A-Levels.

This year Gorgon City have played Glastonbury, Radio 1's Big Weekend in Glasgow and seen one of their singles, Ready For Your Love, chart at number four.

Their second single, Here For You with Laura Welsh, made it to number seven in March and their latest single, Unmissable, featuring Zak Abel went in at number 12.

Their album, Sirens, released on Monday also features Katy B, Jennifer Hudson and Maverick Sabre.

Kye, 27, grew up in Wycombe Marsh with his brother, Dru and sister, Amber, and went to The Wye Valley School in Bourne End.

He said: "I remember when I was growing up, there was an under 18s event in Beaconsfield called Dance 2K. I used to DJ there a lot.

"I was probably 14 at the time. That was where I first started DJing. From that I got into learning how to make music- just because I wanted to make tunes to play out at this under 18s event- that was a big event in growing up."

He is still based in the town and his parents, Jilly and Ade, own the party shop Bassetsbury Balloons in the Eden Walk Gallery in the Eden Centre.

Kye, who had been rehearsing with Matt for a session for Radio 1's Zane Lowe, said: "It is a bit of a shame everything has shut down [in High Wycombe]- with even the Nags Head- I grew up just around that area and there was always live music there.

"It is a shame there is nothing like Dance 2K now. It is kind of like Wycombe is a big place but it has got no music scene at all.

"It is not close enough to London to be easy to get to but not far enough to have its own thing going on."

He went to Henley College after school to do his A-Levels but said: "I spent too much time trying to make music so I didn't really get any qualifications- I think I had one and a half A-Levels."

He then got a job at MWH in Amersham Road in architect design, which he admits was pretty "random." But he continued to make music in his spare time before taking it up full time.

Kye said: "I think I made a house track. It was the first track in years I thought was good enough to send to people.

"I sent it to Radio 1 and Kiss DJs and they started playing it on the radio.

"That was about seven years ago. That was pretty crazy.

"I was DJing and making music for a while on my own."

He then met Matt on the DJ circuit and they decided to collaborate together. It was when they released their first single with singer songwriter, Yasmin, called Real that they realised they were onto something- it charted at number 44.

He said: "When me and Matt started Gorgon City a couple of years ago. It isn't just underground music- it crossed over a bit more making it into the play lists and getting in the charts, which was something I never intended to do.

"I was doing underground dance music that wouldn't get played on the radio, unless it was a 1am show. It happened randomly when we started Gorgon City.

"We are on the same label as Rudimental and Clean Bandit- Black Butter Records."

"It [Real] is quite a simple stripped back understated house tune. When we made it we weren't expecting it to get in the charts... that was a real surprise."

They collaborated with singer MNEK for Ready for Your Love, which was released in January.

Kye said: "That was even more of a surprise as it got to number four.

"We have just been making music for years and years and all of a sudden in a couple of months everything blew up for us. It has all gone really quick.

"It was crazy- when we made that track with Yasmin- we were just chatting about it- we just made that track for a laugh. A few days ago we performed it on Jools Holland.

"It has been pretty much non stop. We were working really hard on an album. We have been spending all week in the studio and as soon as the weekend comes we will be going out touring wherever around the UK and we have done a few tours in America and Australia- all over the place.

"It is pretty mental- all the TV and radio stuff we have been doing- it has been really intense."

They are next off to do a tour in America and in November will be doing a UK tour.

Kye said: "There have been a few moments- playing Glastonbury- that was pretty crazy and playing the Radio 1 Big Weekend. It was quite a small line up- all the other line up were massive people- UK and American and pop stars. It is weird to be part of that. It was a big moment.

"I have always made music just as hobby. Even though I was doing it full time on my own it was quite underground. It was grimy little clubs- I felt comfortable there.

"It is weird to be in the whole showbiz scene. It is a bit daunting but at the same time I want to make the most of it and just enjoy it."
