The LadyKillers
Remember the Ladykillers, that quirky Ealing Comedy film starring Alec Guinness and Peter Sellers? Well, here it is again, re-written for the stage by Graham Lineham, author of Father Ted and The IT Crowd. Led by 'Professor' Marcus, a disparate gang of criminal misfits, posing as a quintet of musicians, rent a room in the home of elderly Mrs Louisa Wilberforce to plan a heist. Always on the back foot and seeking to limit the damage they are forced to involve the old lady in their plans. But Louisa is as wise as her moth-eaten parrot, General Gordon and soon outwits them. Troyka
Troyka are an experimental British trio who make rich and enthralling instrumental music. Featuring Kit Downes (once Mercury nominated in his own right) on hammond/synths, Chris Montague on guitar/loops and Josh Blackmore on drums, Troyka is far more than the sum of its parts and is definitely not your usual Hammond organ trio. Ornithophobia is the London three-piece’s third studio album and truly marks the fruition of five years' worth of musical experimentation. Influenced by the likes of Tim Berne, Aphex Twin, Deerhoof, Albert King and Flying Lotus, their music is intense, ambitious and iconoclastic. Unpredictable, yet catchy, melodies woven into complex time signatures may be a trade mark of the trio at full swing, but it is the flavours of textural beds, polyrhythmic post-dance, haunting trip-hop and atmospheric post-rock that make this record a sensation of the heart as well as the mind. Tickets are £12, available online at www.spinjazz.net
2 April, 8.30pm, The Spin Jazz Club, The Wheatsheaf, 129 High Street, Oxford OX1 4DF.
