Over 200 live music fans packed in a Beaconsfield pub to watch budding singers battle it out during the first round of The Voice of South Bucks singing contest.

Seven singers went head to head for a place in the second round of the contest at The Red Lion Knotty Green, in Penn Road.

Each hopeful singer performed three songs to entertain the audience.

The contest attracted rising stars from all walks of life, including 88-year-old Beaconsfield resident, David Owen and 18-year-old Hannah Walters from Penn.

The winner of the first heat was 27-year-old Penn Street resident Tom Cary, who soared to the top of the leader board with 12 points and will go on to compete with other lucky winners at the second heat on Saturday, April 11.

The first heat of the competition, which has been running for four years, raised more than £100 for 'Musical Rendezvous', which pays for elderly Beaconsfield residents to go to see musicals in the West End.

The Grand Final takes place on Saturday, April 25 and the lucky winner will walk away £200 in cash and vouchers, a trophy provided by Shoebedo in Maxwell Road, a pair of designer sunglasses from Boots the Opticians in Gregories Road and an all-expenses paid trip to sing at the prestigious 'La Fête de la Musique' in Beaconsfield’s twin town, Langres, France, as part of the Beaconsfield Twinning Association's 20th anniversary celebrations.

Susan Jones, Secretary of the Beaconsfield Twinning Association said: "It was a great night and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It is amazing what talent there is in and around Beaconsfield."

Landlady, Tina Massie, said: "The quality of the singers was astonishingly good. The talent we witnessed was incredible."

Compere, Chris Owen added: "I think it's fantastic that South Bucks can boast so many wonderful singers. And with only a few points in it, there's still 'all to play for' going into the next round."
