AFTER several local shows and a clutch of tantalising songs collated on their singles to date, Pete & the Pirates' album is the source of some anticipation. Familiar songs like Knots and Mr Understanding still sound fresher than a day-old daisy with their eager new wave chops and ripchord melodies.
There's a fresh-faced charm about the lo-fi scribings that make up the bulk of the album as twin vocalists Thomas and Pete cross over each other's lines to make themselves heard about the hugely appealing noise behind them.
Humming gives pace to more delicate flavours, while Ill Love suggests they know a thing or two about broken hearts. Ahh. One day someone like Stephen Street could make them massive, but for now just lap up the top tunes.
