CAN white boys play the blues? Is soul of the blue-eyed variety really soul music at all? For all that Estelle whipped up a minor race row recently, it's nothing new. Dusty Springfield was possessed of a set of pipes that had nothing to do with colour of eyes, or skin. Whether tackling Bacharach/David torch songs, folksy whimsy, full-on R&B (mostly made with British session players) or even the hi-NRG romp of Pet Shop Boys she brought something unique and fabulous to a song.
This 49-track set is the perfect Dusty primer and finally brings to disc some of her less obvious cuts including the sumptuous cover of Spooky, the frequently overlooked Magic Garden, Wherever Would I Be (her 1994 duet with Daryl Hall) and her last chart hit, Roll Away. Sheer class.
