The Bluetones - Collection (UMC) ***
THERE'S no shortage of Bluetones compilations, but if you're in the market for one you could do a lot worse than opt for this amiable 20-tracker.
Opening with the woozy
jingle-jangle of their biggest hit, Slight Return, this set serves as a timely reminder that The Bluetones easy dismissal as Stone Roses copyists was a tad hasty.
Mark Moriss has an undoubted way with a nonchalant vocal - check out The Last of the Great Navigators for a vocal that Tim Burgess would've been chuffed with - and is no slouch when it comes to whipping up a melody. I Was A Teenage Jesus, Bluetonic, Carnt Be Trusted, unsung leaches the lot of 'em.
While mosty of their baggy and Britpop contemporaries fizzled out, The Bluetones kept formation.
