International stars play at festival
The Rose Consort of Viols arrives in Amersham on April 8
The Rose Consort of Viols arrives in Amersham on April 8

TALENTS from the world of classical music will soon arrive in Bucks for the 26th Amersham Festival of Music. This year's festival, which was originally founded by Iain Ledingham in 1983, opens with J S Bach's B Minor Mass on Friday, March 28, at St Clement Danes School, Chorleywood.

The celebrated work will be performed by singers from The Royal Academy of Music, accompanied by the Amersham Festival Chamber Orchestra.

Also included in this year's programme is Songs From The Shows, a celebration of songs and scenes from well-loved West End musicals, on Wednesday, April 2, at St James' Church Centre, Gerrards Cross.

Renowned ensemble Concert Royal arrives at Chenies Manor House on Friday, April 4 with Jane Austen's Musical England. The concert, which has already sold out, draws on Austen's personal love for music and includes works by Franz Josef Haydn, Thomas Arne, James Hook and Charles Dibdin.

The award-winning Rose Consort of Viols will perform Trickling Tears & Ruthless Rage, a collection of dramatic songs from the Elizabethan era, with mezzo-soprano Catherine King, on Tuesday, April 8, at St Mary's Parish Church.

Established more than 20 years ago, the ensemble has performed throughout Britain and Europe, with programmes including works by Taverner, Tallis, Byrd, Lawes, Locke and Purcell.

The festival also includes a performance by the South Bucks Choral Society on Saturday, April 5, at Eton College. In recognition of the 400th anniversary since Milton's birth, the choir will perform Handel's Samson, which was based on the renowned poet's Samson Agonistes.

There are also plenty of events to suit younger audiences. The Chiltern Youth Chamber Orchestra arrives on Sunday, March 30 at St Mary's Parish Church, with a selection of works by Elgar, Bartok, Handel and Bach. Among the orchestra members is Henry Lindsay, who has reached the finals of the BBC Young Musician of the Year competition.

Then on Tuesday, April 1, at The Amersham School, soloist Jennifer Stinton will put young flautists through their paces with a flute masterclass.

Youngsters can also look forward to a percussion extravaganza on Sunday, April 6, at The Amersham School.

Expert percussionist Les Lawrence will introduce a range of instruments from around the world, including the timpani, snare drums and tam tams, as well as a wide range of Latin American instruments.

The Amersham Festival runs from Wednesday, March 26 to Sunday, April 13 at various venues. Details: 01494 724942 or www.amershamfestival.org
