The US version of The Killing, starring Mireille Enos, has been axed
US TV bosses have decided to axe The Killing after two series.
Mireille Enos and Joel Kinnaman have rocketed to stardom for their roles as cops in the show, based on the cult hit Danish TV series Forbrydelsen. But network AMC has announced it will not be making a third season, TVline.com reported.
AMC said in a statement: "After much deliberation, we've come to the difficult decision not to renew The Killing for a third season.
"AMC is incredibly proud of the show and is fortunate to have worked with such a talented team on this project, from showrunner Veena Sud and our terrific partners at Fox Television Studios to the talented, dedicated crew and exceptional cast."
The show about the hunt for the killer of teenage girl Rosie Larson debuted to critical acclaim, but faced a backlash from viewers after it failed to reveal who the culprit was at the end of series one.
The season two finale drew 1.5 million viewers, down 17 per cent from the premiere and down 35 per cent from the final episode of its first series.
Mireille earned an Emmy nomination for her performance as detective Sarah Linden as did Michelle Forbes, who played the dead girl's mother.
The US adaptation of The Killing split the original Danish show into two seasons. The second season of Forbrydelsen sees the lead detective return to solve a different crime.
