Emma Stone has been confirmed as the new star of a Broadway version of Cabaret.

The Amazing Spiderman actress had already been rumoured to be in talks for a part, but it has now been announced that she will take over from Michelle Williams in the role of Sally Bowles from November 11, which will mark her Broadway debut.

Alan Cumming, who plays the chilling Emcee, has extended his run to March 29 at the Studio 54 theatre.

Set in 1931 Berlin, Cabaret centres on the world of the indulgent Kit Kat Klub as it becomes intertwined with the world outside, which gets more precarious as Nazis take over.

Brokeback Mountain star Michelle first stepped into the role this spring, when Emma had to withdraw due to scheduling conflicts.

Sally has previously been played by Liza Minnelli, Jill Haworth, Gina Gershon, Melina Kanakaredes, Natasha Richardson, Jane Leeves, Lea Thompson, Alyson Reed and Judi Dench, among others.

The current show is a revival of a revival. Also starring Alan, it ran for more than 2,000 performances from 1998 to 2004 and won the Tony Award in 1998 for best musical revival.

Cabaret, both the Broadway show and 1972 film starring Liza, Joel Grey and Michael York, are based on the 1951 Broadway play I Am a Camera, which, in turn, was based on Christopher Isherwood's book Goodbye to Berlin.
