Record-breaking rowers in Marlow are celebrating a world best after they completed the equivalent of a trip to space in the fastest time ever.

A mixed team from Marlow Rowing Club – aged between 50 and 59 and some new to the sport – took turns to complete a continuous 100km row on a single rowing machine.

The world record time of in a time of five hours, 51 minutes was set last Saturday overlooking the Thames at the club’s new £3m headquarters.

The squad smashed the previous record by over an hour and 40 minutes.

And the impressive feat came after six of the team had only learned to row within the last three to eight years as part of the club’s Learn To Row courses.

Deputy Club Secretary Dave Faulkner said: "A great team effort got us a result better than expected both in the preparation and delivery.

“The rowers showed true grit and determination to keep up the pace throughout and the many supporters provided brilliant motivation to do so.

“A great event in our fantastic new gym overlooking the Thames showing the true fighting spirit of Marlow Rowing Club."
