A notoriously busy Marlow road saw the highest number of speeders in the area just weeks before plans for a zebra crossing on the traffic black spot were rejected.

On Wednesday, September 2, 38 motorists were caught speeding on Seymour Court Road, as part of a two day community Speedwatch programme enforced by local officers in an attempt to crack down on speeding in the area.

Campaigners have been calling for a Zebra Crossing to be installed on the road, which has two primary schools and a nursery close by.

However three weeks after the Speedwatch programme took place, the petition was presented to the Marlow Local Area Forum, where it was decided that a crossing would not be a priority as there was no history of collisions.

Petition organiser, Chris Potter, has said although the statistics are not surprising, it proves that action needs to be taken.

He said: “The speed at which people come round the corner is ridiculous. Drivers can be really stupid.

“We should have had that info before we went to the LAF, something has to be done before it comes to the death of a child."

The LAF said that other options would be considered, however it would have to wait until a town wide safety survey was carried out.

Although with two primary schools and a nursery close by campaigners are desperate for action to be taken before the survey takes place.

Mr Potter continued: “We have no idea when this survey is even going to happen. Even if we cannot get a Zebra crossing then we need to get more signage at least. We just need to do what we can.

“I know that works. If I see a sign that says ‘It’s 30 for a reason’ or signs warning that there are children around then I slow down straight away.

“We don’t want to have to wait until they do a full safety survey in the area – something needs to be done now."

Bolter End saw the second highest number of speeders at 36, and Sgt Robin Hughes has said warning letters have been issued and enforcement will take place.

Previous speeding crackdowns in Marlow saw 65 drivers issued with tickets in just one morning, and one motorist was caught speeding at 57mph past a primary school.
