A gruelling countryside race had another successful year as a record breaking number of runners took to the Hambleden Valley to put their endurance to the test.

The annual Frieth Hilly saw 520 runners complete the challenging 10K and 5K routes on Saturday, October 18, with the longer route completely selling out.

Fabian Downs from Chilterns Harriers Running club scooped gold in the 10K event, and walked away with the fastest time in the history of the race, completing it in 35:2 minutes.

And in a hat trick of records £11,000 was raised for Frieth C of E School, the highest amount to date, which will go towards upgrading the school’s computer equipment.

Race director Diane Hill said: “What a day, what a race, what an atmosphere! It was simply amazing to be a part of and we are so lucky that we have such a great community and superb school.

“It was great to see so many clubs supporting us this year and their presence made the day even more exciting.

“My heartfelt thanks go out to all the parents and friends and family of the school who volunteered to organise the day – without them, we simply couldn’t have made this happen.”

Members from Henley Tri-Club, Marlow Striders and Handy Cross Runners all turned out to take part.

Alice Leake was first female to win the 10K race, completing it in just 42:48 minutes.

The winner of the 5K race was Finn Bell, who crossed the line at 19:32 mins and the winning woman was Hatty Bell who finished hot on his heels at 21:05 mins.
