A major apartment development in Bourne End has taken a step backwards after a supermarket giant pulled out of the project.

McCarthy and Stone announced Sainsbury’s will no longer be a part of the Blyton House scheme on The Parade where work has already begun on 25 retirement apartments.

In March last year the retailer initially snubbed rumours from residents that it would not be setting up a ‘local’ branch in conjunction with the development.

McCarthy and Stone said it is now on the hunt for a new partner.

A spokesperson said: “We can confirm that Sainsbury’s has decided not to proceed with a Sainsbury’s Local outlet at our Blyton House development in Bourne End.

“We have notified our homeowners of this change, and would like to reassure that we are already in discussions with other retailers and will keep homeowners up-to-date as matters proceed.

“The Bourne End site is currently under construction and is fully sold out. We expect to provide further information to residents in the near future.”
