Hundreds of people have signed a petition campaigning against the construction of a Travelodge opposite an upmarket Marlow health club.

The petition launched by The Globe Park Action Group (GPAG) has gathered 742 online signatures in a week opposing to the construction of a budget hotel opposite The Marlow Club on Fieldhouse Lane over concerns it will impact the future of businesses and parking in the area.

GPAG fear if plans get the green light the hundreds of cars that park on the proposed site would be forced on to the roads, throwing the streets in to gridlock and forcing people away from businesses.

Leaflets have also been delivered through the doors of properties surrounding the estate, urging residents to sign the petition as the number of supporters continues to rise.

The petition states: “This vacant site is currently leased as car parking and used by both The Marlow Club and local businesses for this purpose.

“If Travelodge plans go ahead, several hundred cars will be forced to park on the roadside, worsening the already poor state of car parking on Globe Business Park and forcing cars further along surrounding residential roads, affecting residents and making the commute to and from work more complicated.

“The Globe Park Action Group is opposed to the construction of a Travelodge on this particular site on the basis that local businesses and residents will suffer as a result of the enforced car parking changes and the increase in traffic flow.

“This would be particularly bad during the construction period.”

The international hotel chain has been in talks with Wycombe District Council since January last year about expanding its business in to the town after a previous plan to build a Travelodge at Computer House, near Marlow Station, fell through.

Travelodge is yet to comment on the petition.
