A week long speeding crackdown saw “disappointed” Marlow officers hand out a staggering 162 tickets, with a number of drivers hitting 20mph over the legal speed limit.

The operation – which ran from May 9 to 13 - included Bourne End, Hedsor and Stokenchurch, with officers focussing on 30 mph zones and areas near schools.

The highest speed clocked during the week long operation was a shocking 62 mph on the Henley Road, near Sir William Borlase’s Grammar School.

Although the task was a success, Sgt Robin Hughes said he was disappointed with the amount of tickets they were forced to hand out, especially to younger drivers.

He said: “We were disappointed about the amount of tickets we did issue. We were also particularly disappointed about was the amount of young drivers we stopped.

“Three were 6th form students at schools in the area. It doesn’t seem like a huge amount but we rarely stop young drivers.”

Officers caught five drivers hitting 20mph over the speed limit throughout the week, four drivers were fined for using their phones and two cars were seized for not having insurance in Bourne End and Stokenchurch.

One motorist was also arrested for theft of a vehicle and driving without a licence in Stokenchurch.

Dates have already been set for the next speeding crackdown over the summer and police are planning another in the autumn.

Sgt Hughes continued: “Our community speed watch continues. We have already set more dates for more programmes over the summer months.

“If you reduce your gear to 3 in a 30 zone then you are more likely to stick to the speed limit.

“Be aware of the speed limits. They are there for a reason and take extra care when you see signs for schools.”
