Large scaffolding towers have engulfed Marlow's famous chain bridge as workmen moved in to begin major repairs works.

Drivers in Marlow are being forced to take the long way round to cross the river from this week after the town's bridge was shut to traffic on Monday.

The landmark will closed between Monday, August 15 and Friday, August 26 for the crucial maintenance.

After a closure two years ago to resurface the road, workmen have now begun a large-scale job to repair the roof and two towers, erecting large scaffolding around the 184-year-old structure.

Other improvements will be made during the closure, including a refubrishment of the traffic islands and an inspection of the suspension chain and hangers.

Motorists will be diverted via the High Street, Spittal Street, Chapel Street, Little Marlow Road, A404, Marlow Road and Bisham Road.

Diversion signs will be in place throughout the closure.
