Speculation is mounting over whether Marlow could soon have a dame in its midst after PM Theresa May anounced she wants to see Team GB's Olympic heroes rewarded for their efforts.

Marlow Rowing Club’s Katherine Grainger – now Britain’s most decorated female Olympian – will be bringing back silver following the women’s double scull in Rio.

The five-time Olympic medallist, who was honoured with a CBE in 2013 for services to rowing, could have the highest honour from the Queen added to her string of successes after Downing Street confirmed there would be no cap on honours for Olympic medal winners.

Olympic champions Alex Danson, a regular at Marlow Sports Club and Helen Glover, who recently moved to the area, will also be bringing back gold, after winning the women’s hockey and women’s coxless pair respectively.

Last week Theresa May - who mingled with Grainger at the launch of Marlow's multi-million pound rowing club last year - hailed team GB’s stars, saying she is “extremely proud” of their achievements and wants to see their success recognised.

Her official spokeswoman said the "honours are there to recognise and reward people" such as the country's Olympic athletes.

She said: "To surpass what we did in London and become the first country to ever achieve that at the next away Games is a great achievement.

"In terms of honours, there is an independent process. There is no formal cap on the number of honours that can be awarded."

Theresa May has been a huge supporter of Marlow Rowing Club and attending the official reopening last year together with Grainger – after it was destroyed in a fire in 2011.
