A pensioner who fell on a busy Marlow street and injured herself says the county council needs to “take responsibility” and fix the pavements.

Carlota Hartfield, 75, was left “dazed” and in agony after falling on Marlow High Street, near Café Copia, on September 1, fracturing her pelvis.

More than a month on, the pensioner still has to get around using a walking frame and rarely leaves her home because of the pain.

Speaking about her accident, she said: “It was a beautiful day, I was feeling exuberant. I went out to get some flowers for my daughter and I was feeling positive but before I knew, I had tripped over and fell flat.

“Two angels came and picked me up, they were amazing. The café owner came out and gave me a chair and a glass of water. Everyone was so wonderful.”

An ambulance was called and Ms Hartfield was taken to Wexham Park Hospital for X-rays, where she stayed for three nights.

Praising the care she received in hospital, she said: “Everyone concerned was amazing. We hear bad news about the NHS but I couldn’t fault the care I got there.”

However, since returning home, the pensioner says she has struggled with the pain.

She said: “Since day one I haven’t been able to do anything, my friends have been coming round to help me clean. I try to stay positive but I am in a lot of pain. The first few steps when I start moving are very stiff.

“The pavements are bad and I am not the first person to have fallen there. This is serious. I can’t sleep. For a person of my age, this has caused a lot of stress.”

She is now calling on Bucks County Council to address the “bad” pavements.

She said: “They have to be responsible for their actions. The council tax we pay is so high, can they not realise the damage? A number of people have fallen there and the pavement hasn’t been redone.”

Sam Adams, manager at Café Copia, who rushed to help Ms Hartfield when she injured herself, agreed that the pavements need to be fixed.

He said: “They are really uneven outside. We have tables out the front and they wobble about. Where she fell, there is a drain cover and she obviously tripped and hurt herself.”

Bucks County Council have been approached for comment.
