Plans are in the pipeline to revamp a Marlow leisure centre that has suffered both a gas leak and a leaking roof in the last two months, the district council has confirmed.

Despite a £25 million makeover for the nearby Wycombe Leisure Centre in 2016, Marlow’s own sports facility, Court Garden Leisure Complex, has fallen into disrepair over the years.

Both centres are run by Places for People on behalf of Wycombe District Council.

Parts of the popular Pound Lane leisure centre have been forced to stay closed throughout January and into February after they suffered a gas leak on January 22 – leaving them without hot water and a swimming pool.

It was announced at the end of last month that the centre would need a new gas pipe installed before it could fully reopen.

A number of the centre’s regular users have now urged the council to modernise and upgrade the centre.

Fiona Scozzari said the centre needs an internal viewing area added, while Rosy Bartlett said the closure of the swimming pool has been “inconvenient.”

She said: “Friends of my children have to go to High Wycombe instead, causing them to leave forty minutes earlier. I am very dissatisfied - when is it going to be fixed?”

In the wake of the latest problems, it has been announced that Wycombe District Council have been drawing up options to improve the leisure complex.

Cllr Alex Collingwood, who represents Marlow North and West on Wycombe District Council, has been calling for the centre to be refurbished and welcomed the plans to look at improving it.

He said: “I will be very interested to see the plans and see how the centre will be improved and I'm very pleased that we are looking at this.

“The pool is nearly 40 years old. The building has had a lot of problems, they have got the gas leak problems at the moment and they had an issue with the roof of the sports hall just before Christmas.

“We really need to look seriously at what the best way forward is but I am conscious that we need to make sure we listen to what residents want. It needs to be beneficial in the short term, the medium term and the long term.”

Simon Farr, a spokesman for Wycombe District Council, confirmed to the Marlow Free Press that options for the centre are being looked at.

He said: “The Court Garden Leisure Complex has required a number of repairs in recent years and so Wycombe District Council has been busy carrying out proactive work to find out options and costs for the future.

“The council carried out a public consultation about the future of the Leisure Complex last year in order to find out what residents and sports clubs like about the centre and what improvements people would like to see us make.

“Those findings, along with further work and analysis, have been used to draw up options which are due to be presented to Cabinet in March for a decision.”
