Marlow is gearing up once again for its social showpiece occasion, the town Regatta, which will celebrate its 18th birthday this year.

The popular annual event sees crowds of thousands flock to the banks of the River Thames each year for one of the busiest weekends in the town’s history.

The 163-year-old rowing event has gone from strength-to-strength since the reformed committee came together 18 years ago to create the Marlow Town Regatta and Festival, after the original Marlow Regatta moved to Dorney Lake.

And this year, the end-of-festival concert, which usually takes place on the Sunday evening, will entertain crowds on the Saturday instead to give more people a chance to enjoy the music, with alternative rock band Toploader headlining.

Bringing a new dimension to the weekend will be the introduction of adaptive rowing, with Marlow Rowing Club leading the way in helping more disabled people enjoy the quintessential British sport, and the re-introduction of the grandstand by the finish line, giving more revellers the chance to see the rowers in action.

More than 4,000 people turned out to last year's event, with Sir Steve and Lady Ann Redgrave kicking off the celebrations.

Chairman of the Regatta committee Nav Ali said: “This year is the 18th birthday for the Marlow Town Regatta in its current format and I am delighted that we have managed to create some amazing new elements to the event – all down to the feedback of our customers.

“This is an event organised by the local community, for the local community and celebrating the local community and remains one of the must attend events in the social calendar.

“I invite everyone to come down and enjoy the party atmosphere that we create each year – whilst enjoying the rowing, friendship and music in one of Marlow’s most beautiful spaces.”

The regatta will take centre stage again in June 16 and 17, with tickets on sale from today (Thursday) for subscribers - those who have previously bought tickets - and tomorrow for the the general public.
