350,000 shoppers recorded at Eden
MORE than 350,000 people visited Eden in its first four days - more than twice the population of Wycombe district.
Over the first four days of trading, a staggering 350,000 shoppers came to Eden to join in the opening celebrations and experience High Wycombe's new £300 million shopping and leisure destination.
The figure smashed centre bosses' expectation that 235,000 people would come to discover the new store during it's opening weekend from last Thursday to Sunday.
It also exceeds footfall figures from other recently opened town centre schemes.
Wycombe distirct has a population of around 162,000 people.
Daniel Tomkinson, centre director of Eden said: "We were completely amazed by the phenomenal amount of people that have visited Eden over its opening weekend.
The footfall figures exceeded our highest hopes and the atmosphere was incredible.
"We always knew that there was a demand for a quality shopping experience in High Wycombe and surrounding areas but seeing the hundreds of thousands of visitors shopping and enjoying all of Eden's fantastic facilities was a real buzz."
Footfall figures were calculated by electronic counters at the centre's entrances.
Eden's shops have also experienced trading figures that superseded all expectations.
On Thursday, Marks and Spencer reported more than 10,000 customers had walked through their doors by 2pm - just four hours after they opened at 10am.
Jillian Staniforth, store manager of the new House of Fraser at Eden, said: "House of Fraser at has had a fantastic opening with phenomenal footfall.
"We are trading well above our expectations. We are now looking forward to a busy Easter weekend as shoppers continue to come into the town centre to experience one of the most innovative House of Fraser stores we have delivered and to check out the region's most exciting shopping and leisure destination."

I wonder how many of the 350,000 actually found something they needed to buy other than clothes. On the opening day there were plenty of people walking through but I didn’t see many buying!
How did they count the 350,000? Is there a machine to count the customers on the entrance to the complex or is this just an estimate?
Having lots of people is no good if you’re not selling what they want....

Ivor, you have actually been the only customer, you've just gone back 350,000 times looking for the mundane items on your shopping list.
Or does it just feel like you've been back 350,000 times and told us about each and every trip

I only asked how they came to the figure of 350,000. Are there devices to count the shoppers or is this figure just “an estimate” conjured up out of thin air?
According to another news story on this site yesterday traffic was only up by 15%. The busses and pavements must have been bursting with all the extra people rushing to the complex.... I am not unsure how all those extra people could arrive with only a 15% rise in traffic.... One of the figures seems wrong and I’m not sure which one it is....

Okay, so now you know. Only problem with an electronic counter at the entrance is that it only counts how many people cross that threshold going in. It does not count the number of people who go in and then come out and then go in again. So now here is what I figured. They are trying to really hype this Eden opening by using usless statitists. Guess what? The story says 350,000 over 4 days. that comes out to approx 87,500 per day (which is almost half Wycombes population. and how many of the 87,500 are repeats, that may have entered 4,5,6 or more times by just wandering.?

I wonder how "real" these figures are, ok they say electronic counters but how do we know i wouldnt be surprised if these figures were completely over-inflated as Ron says to hype Eden up

Yes. I was just about to point that out. If the people walked into the complex then out to the High Street and back in to the complex again they would be counted twice giving a total of only 175,000 over 4 days which works out at just 43,750 per day. Perhaps the fact that traffic was only up by just 15% says it all and casts doubt on the figures and reveals the true picture?
It also depends on what type of electronic counter they use. Some electronic counting systems count one fat people as two normal sized people.
I think the figure of 350,000 must be taken with a very, very large pinch of salt. The people of Wycombe are not fooled by the PR machine very easily....
What ever the figures were one thing is for certain this is that the centre does not provide us with many of the goods we expect from such a complex.

oh look Ivor says something positive.
oops sorry my mistake, it's a pig flying, I bet you are wondering if that was counted too. Maybe there is a colony of ants that were counted, or bees, or fat bees counted as two.
I think it is great that we have good shops in a nice centre

Good shops? They mostly sell women’s clothes! There’s very little for the men folk of the town and as for selling everyday goods well I’m sure you know my views on that subject!
erm: My latest blog is positive and upbeat. Haven’t you read it yet? No? Well take a look and leave a comment (on the blog) to let me know what you think!

I thought it was wonderful to see so many people out in wycombe, I actually saw different people from all walks of live and religions sharing and enjoying something good that has happened to our town! TRY ISAAC LORDS.
If you want overpriced tat go to Eden, when in town I tried to get a couple 'splitpins' NO CHANCE the answer was always the same, TRY ISAAC LORDS.
We are lucky to still have some of our old established shops.
With most of Eden being there before the refurbishment, where was the £300 million spent? for that money I would have expected the developers to provide a tunnel to take the A40 traffic away from the Eden centre.

These figures are pure bluster, the centre is failing miserably.
Takings at the counters are appalling, some of the retailers are spitting nails and feel duped.

Do you want it to fail? And if so why? I really don't get some of the comments on here.
Wycombe is making a real effort to get into the 21st century but all a lot of you can do is whine and moan.
Would it make you happy if Eden had to close and became a ghost shopping centre? Would you be happy to perhaps go back 20 years and enter the dark cold octagon?
I really can't understand some of you in here. Not all the shops in Eden are open yet so we have more excitement to come.
I actually think some of you have nothing better to do but moan and I feel really sorry for you.
and Mario how on earth do you know the centre is failing and the takings are appalling?

If there were not so many posters on here associated with Eden then maybe my comments would be a little more reserved.
Stop conning the publice public you t*ssers. Every Wycombe resident should be conserving cash at the moment, for what lies around the corner in the next few months and years for the economy is the worst anyone will have seen in post war Britain.
Smokey, to answer your question about Eden: I predict it will be deserted within two years with tumbleweed blowing through, but I do not wish it so!

Who cares about numbers, the amount of people in town yesterday was sparse to say the least. I walked aroud and quite frankly not sure what the fuss is about, can't see that there's much more variety, many of the shops have merely moved from one part of town to the other, big deal. Because of parking and the fact that large purchases have to be ordered anyway, I will continue to use the internet and out-of-town shopping areas like john lewis.

I note that in Ivor’s posting timed at 2.48 on Monday 17th of March in response to the story “Eden – it’s what we’ve been waiting for”, timed at 4.47 on Saturday 15th of March, he specifies one item on his, now celebrated, shopping list.
This is a “double-breasted suite”.
I have never seen such an item, let alone sat on one. I imagine they would only appeal to individuals with rather unusual preferences.
However, I am intrigued vis-à-vis their appearance.
Do they have tassels?

OK Smokey good for you, but do you not accept that trying to whip Wycombe residents into a credit card frenzy at Eden is a little irresponsible?
The sales performance there is terrible and conning a few locals itno dropping few pounds down the slots will not help. The venture is ill-timed and doomed.

I see a brand new shopping centre and I would love to know where you get your info that the sales are terrible - I really would.

ffs Smokey, don't you know a single person who works there? Some of the assistants are standing in their department for a whole afternoon and not making a SINGLE sale....

she has been incredibly busy
I asked various assistants in House of Fraser, Marks and spencers, Monsoon - they all said they had been very very busy.
Admitedly I didn't ask to see their sales figures at the end of the day - perhaps I should have done.;)

"Busy" just means footfall not sales. The two terms are completely unrelated in the context of a new shopping centre.
The bowling place has been fully booked on occasions but some of the other stores you mentioned - you are having a LAUGH!

I don't argue without evidence.
Lets wait to see what the papers say what the sales are
I am bored now - we are going round in circles. You have not given me one shred of proof that these shops have made a loss - not one
And as I say - M and S were busy - I should know cos I queued for ages at the checkout
and wycombe is actually quite an affluent town. There is money and it will be spent.

Well of course it's going to be busy for pete's sake, it's only been open for a few days, once the novelty factor wears off then the complaints from businesses will start.

A warning to avoid paying attention to Mario. He has been seen to be consistently lie in his posts. I personally suspect he's working for a neighbouring shopping centre. Either that or he's a total sociopath.

There have already been comments about one of Eden's STAR ATTRACTIONS allowing 8 or 9 year olds to play the slot machines on their premises, shopping numbers shouldn't be the only thing WDC and BFP have to interest them.
Wycombe may have waited a long time for upgrading but at what cost if the law is being broken the first week end it opens.

I have nothing against Eden, As a wycombe guy born & Bred I wish to see us put back onto the map BUT are you telling me that THEY spend 300 MILLION and they come up with something you cannot even call a shopping centre because it has no real roof, and you freeze your t**ts off trying to walk through one store to another. Look around you years ago centres have been built, Uxbridge Chimes, Watford Harlequin, Manchester Trafford Centre, Birmingham Bullring, Reading Oracle, AND NOW in 2008 and 300 Million pounds later they Build this poor excuse of a shopping centre you would expect it to be if not better than these shopping centres but at least on par with them. A shopping centre is not just a bunch of shops stuck together in one place but placed in a pleasant environment with maybe a bit of clever design and ambience to walk around in.

Very true Steve.
I remember well when the Cressex retail area sprung up (Asda, John Lewia, Wycombe6 etc...) and more recently the Marsh retail development.
You did not hear vociferous opposition to either of them because they were welcomed by locals in the Ward, Wycombites generally and the wider Bucks population...in short they were much needed sensible developments that did not impact anyone adversely.
It is not just Eden that people hate, ask anyone about there feelings toward the new 460 dwelling development behind Currys in the Marsh and you will get a barrage of expletives.
Both developments cause serious traffic problems, adversely impact neighbouring areas (remember Ye Auld High Street WDC, do ya, no really, do ya?), Desborough and of course the market traders.
WDC needs to be overhauled, its all about filling the coffers with as many tax and rates receipts as possible, to h*ll with the consequences, and then spending half of them on WDC employee pensions.
You never see WDC show that in a pie chart do you!
