Eden chief defends 'disgusting' opening

EDEN'S centre director has responded to criticism that a Brazilian samba launch parade was alientating' and disgusting'.

After scantily clad dancers with elaborate headresses sashayed their way through Eden's streets last Thursday morning to mark it's opening, some spectators complained that the opening ceremony wasn't multicultural.

Zahid Jawed, a volunteer speaking for Wycombe Islamic Society, said the "semi-naked dancers" had "alienated significant parts of the community", meaning organisers had wasted an opportunity for community cohesion.

Retired Jacqueline Green, of Deeds Grove, called the parade "totally disgusting" likened it to a nightclub opening. She said: "We have so many cultures in this town, they all could have had a part to play."

Eden's launch event programme continues until April 19, featuring days themed on Latin-America, African Carribean, Oriental, Asian, European and sporting traditional celebrations.

Daniel Tomkinson, Eden's centre director, said: "We have been delighted by the positive feedback that we have received from many thousands of our visitors. However we regret if any offence was caused during our opening procession.

"Eden's launch entertainment programme was designed to create a colourful, vibrant and energetic carnival atmosphere to mark the opening of Eden and High Wycombe's bright future.

"The five week long period of celebrations have been designed to be non-denominational and celebrate performing arts from all around the world including steel drummers to face painters, Chinese dragons to mine artists."

The diversity of cultures in Wycombe was more than represented by all the people that actually attended the centre on its first days... as customers.

What more symbolism & unity could you want than that?

It was certainly colourful. Personally I agree, I would have preferred something more traditional for the opening, perhaps a good brass band. Although I do like the themed days - I would have been happy for the Brazillian dancers to appear later in the programme.

My kids very much enjoyed the Chinese dragon and dancers that were at Eden today.

Start as you meant to go on that’s what I say. In a town such as Wycombe with so many cultures a little more thought should have been put into things.

The opening of the complex should have been a defining moment for the town. Instead it turned into a parade of perversion with men using mobile phones to take pictures of the scantily clad women. Hardly a family environment was it?

No doubt many of the residents of Wycombe will be showing their disapproval by avoiding the complex as a result....

oh Ivor, give it a rest. No doubt you say these things to wind people up, I cant imagine you are actually that much of a bore in real life.
You really must have to work very hard at being so boring and **** condescending.
Why cant you just embrace the changes.

Why is Daniel apologising, the opening is already forgotten and things have moved on...has Mr Jawed issue a fatwa or something?

Bexs i always ignore his comments, as i always know they are always negative and he has nothing else in life to do apart from this. He really is pathetic.

I thought the carnival idea was great, roll on Notting Hill at the end of August

I can only presume by those offended by the Eden opening ceremony (Victorians and Muslims seemingly) that you all turn your televisions off at 9PM by rote every evening. There are far more offensive (if you choose to call it that) things streamed into your home every night.

I was at the Edne opening and somehow missed the dancing ladies but did see and hear the band following. Perhaps I should complain about the noise from the band since it was very loud....

The opening was a family occasion, it wasn't only men taking photos on their mobiles, women and children were too.
The scantily clad ladies were a bit OTT, at least we have been spared 'The Full Monty', so far.
Who knows what other ideas Eden has to lower the tone.

I do wish Ivor would go on a positive thinking course.

He appears to be so negative about everything.

He must be over 50 years old and does not want to see anything in Bucks change.

I wish he would just confine his comments to his blog site. Then we can all ignore him completely.

I looked at his blog once and slashing my wrists would have been more entertaining.

A bit more thought should have gone into the choice of entertainers, its not like watching on TV at home where you can turn it off, families with kids seeing semi naked women live in front of them is a little uncalled for. Nobody’s objecting to anyone’s culture or religion but just the naked flesh of a woman’s breast in broad daylight in the presence of your young kids. ITS JUST NOT CRICKET.

As I said on another thread...
Would people make as much fuss if it were bare chested men?
No- I think not.
Sorry I wasn't aware that there were so many prudes in Wycombe
And as for Ivor - I have him sussed - he is on a massive wind up. He has to be - how else can he explain his blogs which really are laugh out loud funny!

I thought nothing wrong with the female dancers. Some people are offended by the way, some females are treated and a dressed from the ethnic minority groups. But it is THEIR ways of doing things. We all have to give and take, whilst respecting other. A two way thing, that IS often forgorten some.

chance would be a fine thing, we never get bare chested men parading around, thats the problem

I am traumatised - I was in Eden this morning anf there were women in there dancing showing their midriffs! And their ankles. This is no place for children - I will be alerting the Vice squad immediately.
But the good news is .... there is a light bulb shop opening soon.

"Previously on Eden..."

Just got back from a heaving Eden teeming with thousands of people, despite the cool weather.

Looks like we need another 2/3 restaurants. There seemed to be queues at all of them...

Yep. Also saw a new set of dancing bare midriffs & a great drumming group. Excellent.

People using terms like 'alienation' and 'disgusting' should look in a dictionary to see what they mean.

Saw no inkling of alienation or disgust at any time.

In fact the exact opposite.

Even the bus service was punctual, despite the theme park ride braking at the last second & ultradodgy gearbox.

Re the comments of Plus ça change..., Gotham City, Bucks on 3:13pm

Thank you for your report. I would have gone down there myself today but for the cold weather (we even had a snow shower this afternoon). In the knowledge that the wind can whistle though (and potentially snow can blow in) the complex I decided to stay at home. If only they have built it with doors so we could go shopping in the warm. Besides I’ve got enough clothes so there seemed no point to visit the complex today!

IVOR!!!

There were snow flurries in Eden this morning and they had the Huskies out as well!
But the good news is the light bulb shop will be opening soon xx

The rumour mills say both....but alas, that may just be gossip mongering.

But there will be a choice of energy efficient, regular, or purple.

For rooms that are too bright perhaps they will stock special black light bulbs which when turned on make a room darker!

Ivor! I was hoping against hope that you would come online!

Of course, they would need to also stock, in that case, special lamp shades that actually intensify the black light bulbs, for those who want the atmospheric blackening.

I have also been thinking about your double breasted suite dilemma, have you tried Furniture Village on the Marsh? We just got a lovely 2 seater sofa from there...would that count as double breasted?
Posted by: erm, ermsville on 7:18pm Sat 22 Mar 08
The only double breasted item Ivor was after were the semi naked girls on his cameraphone, dirty boy

I should have thought with a name like Eden all those in attendance were rather over-dressed. Or has the wicked serpent already corrupted High Wycombe's innocents?
Posted by: a1ekiss, High Wycombe on 12:09pm Sun 23 Mar 08
Personally, I thought being a multi-cultural town meant that we accepted all cultures regardless of our own beliefs or race. If it offended so much, why was it not possible to walk away? As I was away at the time, I am gutted to have missed the chance to have seen the opening but from what I have heard it was brilliant and those who insist on complaining just sound like spoilt sports who wouldn’t have been have with anything. I think we should have more parades like this especially if it causes this much indignation.
Posted by: tony, high wycombe on 11:14pm Sun 23 Mar 08
this light bulb shop... will they be supplying the bulbs for the mass of traffic lights we are now burdened with?
i remember when we had traffic flow through town. now it seems once in town we are stuck there!
God help all the ambulances that are now trying to get to stoke mandeville before their cargo passes away........

Ivor you are a stupid, self-opinionated old idiot. Just shut up complaining and let people enjoy being positive. The new Eden Centre is excellent and so much better than those aweful car parks taht made it look like a 1950's bomb site. Eden Mananagement -well done and ignore the tiny stupid complainers.

I must strongly say after all the hype of the new Eden centre how dull and cold it has left me feeling. We were all looking forward to a fantastic new shopping centre, but that it is not.Wycombe had not much to offer before and still has very little to offer,it certainly will not make me shop there any more than i already do.There is no colour,no vegetation,no art just concrete. No warmth, although a perspex roof we still felt like we were on the outside. We did have high hopes for this centre but our hopes were quickly dashed. And as for the local radio advertising over 100 new stores, well that was a false statement. Many people were mislead by this statement and would have been hugely disappointed not to find over 100 NEW stores.I also did not agree with the almost bare naked women with children around,if we wanted private parts pushed in our face we would go to a lap dancing club! All i can say is thank god we have Watford!Mind you even slough is more of a preference than H/W I will just add i am only 34 yrs old and not an old grump!

if I want art I go to an art gallery
If I want vegetation/ trees I go to Hughenden Park. It is a light bright shoppng centre. I agree that we do need more shops and that perhaps the opening was rushed for that reason. It would be good to have a Whittarrds, a Lush (pretty please), and a Disney Store. However these are early days yet.
The one thing I must critisise tho - what is the point of some of the shops that were already in HW - moving to Eden and leaving an empty premises? Why do we need a bigger Carphone warehouse and Claire's accessories? New Look - fair enough - it is much bigger.
So come on Eden - you have made a promising start but give us more.
Lordy aren't I greedy? LOL
Posted by: Tharus Bond, Wycombe on 8:15am Tue 25 Mar 08
The only thing that was good about the Eden centre is the events and the opening ceremony, (didn't see it myself) as the centre is a wind tunnel with a large leak in the roof!
Posted by: TQWood, Hazlemere on 1:31pm Tue 25 Mar 08
im actually glad there is no vegetation it would probably die through lack of care and hurricane winds blowing through the **** hole called Eden

If you look at the car park exit ramp adjacent to the Tescos entrance, they have actually added some wonderful climbing plants on wire netting underneath the ramp, so naff its just untrue.

I find it hard to comprehend how Wycombe has become a town of moaners and negativity. It seems that every story on this site invokes a huge number of sarcastic and whingeing comments. All I can assume from that is it really wouldn't matter what the new shopping centre was like, how many car parks they built, or what type of entertainment they provided for the opening, it still wouldn't be good enough. If HW is so cr*p, why don't you whingers go and live somewhere else? I bet you still wouldn't be happy. It's not perfect by a long stretch, but neither are most of the other towns of similar size across the UK.For once it would be nice to see some positive feedback on this site. There are a lot of benefits to living somewhere like HW, if you can't find any, then please do us all a favour and move on!

There is nothing to defend. To see the human body, clothed or unclothed will neither cast you into hell nor corrupt young minds. The human body is beautiful, amazing, and something we all own and see everyday. Portrayed and admired through art and culture for centuries, to say it is 'not suitable for children', 'disgusting', 'a bit much', is ridiculous. I am happy to live in a society where people are free to show as much of their bodies as they wish. Some 'choose' to cover their hair, head, or bodies from the eyes of others for fear of what it may ignite, under the name of 'modesty' and 'religion'. This has NOTHING to do with religion and EVERYTHING to do with oppression and a perverse fear of the human form and sexuality. I AM OFFENDED BY THAT!
