Teacher cycles for African children and his mum

A P.E TEACHER from High Wycombe is going the extra mile to make a difference to the lives of South African children.

Steve Vanstone, who works at John Hampden Grammar School, has set himself and friends a challenge to do a 160 mile bicycle ride from Buxton to High Wycombe.

The gruelling task is all in aid of the Kusasa Project, which was founded in South Africa.

Last summer staff and pupils from the school met people from the town of Kusasa on a school football tour.

Mr Vanstone said: "It was an amazing experience for me and all the boys. It was really moving. You see it on the television but you don't realise until you see it yourself how lucky we are. We as a group are dedicated to this project after their generous welcome last year."

Mr Vanstone, who is doing the ride with four others, said: " We've already raised over £2,500 and aim to raise twice that much. It will provide children with clothing, school text books and sports equipment, like footballs and footwear. We hope to up this figure again to provide an even brighter future for the under privileged children."

Over one million households in South Africa have no literate adult and 61% of children cannot read by the 4th grade.

The journey is also a dedication to Mr Vanstone's mother, Theresa, who recently died. He said: "I wanted to do something in her memory."

Mr Vanstone and his friends will begin the journey from Buxton on April 6 and hopes to reach High Wycombe after three days.
