PUPILS at a High Wycombe school are campaigning to have their school uniform policy changed.

More than 100 students at Highcrest Community School have signed a petition asking to be allowed to wear their summer school uniform ahead of the summer term in June.

Pupils at the school in Hatters Lane are not allowed to wear the summer uniform despite the current warm temperatures.

Clare Starck, whose Year 9 daughter Laura started the petition, said a "common sense approach" was needed.

She said: "They are only allowed to wear the summer uniform for the last six weeks of term. The weather is irrelevent.

"It's such a brilliant school but it's such a shame they are making them feel uncomfortable. Surely common sense needs to apply?"

Mrs Starck said the 100 signatures on the petition were collected in a single afternoon.

She added: "Teachers have been in support of the childrens' campaign and have been telling them to get their parents to email in."

Maureen Oddie, the school's deputy head, said pupils were only allowed to wear the summer uniforms when there was consistently warm weather.

She said: "This time last year the weather was very inconsistent and we found pupils wore insufficient clothing and were getting wet.

"They are allowed to wear the hot weather tops after the May holiday as that's when the really hot weather comes in."

The hot weather tops were introduced by the school two years ago.

does seem pretty ridiculous, the weather has been warm for 2 weeks now so why is it really a problem?

How daft - when I was at school pupils decided (using common sense) which uniform to wear depending on the weather. There were weeks when some wore summer and some winter but who cares!

At least Highcrest has a summer uniform! Its Blazers & Ties for some other local schools!

Some of the school uniforms in the area are rediculous. Some schools insist on blazers, shirts and ties all year round! Summer uniform should be allowed in all schools and the choice of when to wear it should be at the discretion of the parents - stop the nannying culture! If the kids get cold and wet it wont kill them it will teach them to dress appropriately!

My school uniform consisted of trousers, shirt, tie and blazer. (The school i went to has since changed it after i left.) The girls wore skirts and just after i started there they were also allowed to wear trousers.
In the summer we were allowed to remove our blazers and that was it. Although you could wear short sleeved shirts as i did.

For goodness sake! As long as they are wearing school uniform, does it matter whether it is the summer or winter? If it's hot let them wear the summer one. If it's not, let them wear the winter one! It's just common sense. No point in rules just for the sake of having a rule.

I have son in year 8 at Highcrest and I have to say it's ridiculous that they can now only wear their summer uniform for the last 6 weeks leading up to the summer holidays. Last year they were allowed to wear it after the Easter break, so I'm not sure what's changed! It's actually smarter than the winter uniform in many ways, as the students like to wear it and (no pun intended!) it looks more 'uniform' as they all wear it the same way! No messy shirts hanging out, sloppy ties etc! Come on Highcrest .. get your act together and show the other schools that you care about your students and want them to be 'cool' .. both in temperature and how they look!!! Let them wear the summer uniform after Easter in future please!!

That's a joke, saying that the children will get wet. The kids get chucked out of the school at break and lunch anyway. Judging by the state of my daughters PE kit they also do PE in the rain and guess what - they get wet!

I go to there and I thought it was very unfair. We're allowed to wear the summer uniform now but if you think about it there's not long until the end of term!
