Hundreds of parents fight for school places
MORE than 500 appeals have been lodged against secondary school places allocated to Buckinghamshire pupils.
In the coming weeks 504 appeals will be heard, 185 for primary school and 319 for secondary school.
The number is fewer than previous years. In 2005 there were 624 appeals lodged with 663 and 560 in the following years.
Fewer appeals are actually heard as places are made available at schools in the interim, for example with children moving away or places not being accepted.
The major "pressure" points for the September intake have been in south Bucks schools, says a report to Buckinghamshire County Council's Admissions Forum.
Most in demand were Beaconsfield High, Dr Challoner's, The Royal Grammar and Sir William Borlase, Holmer Green and Chalfonts Community College.
The report says: "Generally the council is happy with the admission outcomes of this allocation round, although it remains very aware of the implications where children do not secure catchment places."
About one in four children passed the 11 plus exams, 24 per cent in Wycombe and 27 per cent in Chiltern and South Bucks.
Of those who passed these exams 97 per cent got into their first preference grammar school.
