Club celebrates its 125th birthday

ONE of Wycombe's oldest football clubs pitted some of its former players against the current squad to mark its 125th birthday.

Lane End Football Club celebrated the landmark by having a Legends team square-up against the current players, who made up the Chairman's 11.

The club, which is based at Lane End Playing Fields, off The Row, Lane End, held a day of fun, which included a buffet lunch, watching the FA Cup final and is going to finish the day off with the club's end of season awards ceremony this evening.

Youth prevailed today with the Chairman's 11 winning 3-1 against the Legends.

Graham Buckle, who is the first team manager and played in goal for the Chairman's 11, said: "I think it is important to recognise the achievement because even some of the professional clubs haven't been around that long.

"It is a very active village and the club rarely has to go out of the area to get players. It has always been a very self-sufficient club through the generations.

"We have had grandfathers, their sons and then their sons all playing for Lane End.

"It has always been a good community club."

One of the father-son combinations playing today was the Hansons.

Kelvin Hanson, 59, started to play for Lane End when he was 15 but has not played football for 20 years.

Today he made a return for Legends 11, on the opposite side to his son Paul, who is the current first team club captain.

Kelvin, who works at his son's garage, said: "I played for 20 minutes and then pulled a muscle. You go to try to run and you just do not have the legs for it.

"The touches are there but you have just lost the pace."

Paul, 33, said: "When I first played for Lane End, I played with my dad in his last game before he retired.

"It was an honour to play with him again."
