Railway opens its doors for first time
RAILWAY enthusiasts were given the chance to see behind the scenes at the Chinnor and Princes Risborough Railway for the first time today.
Visitors had the chance to meet the all-volunteer team which maintains and runs the 135-year-old line and enjoy refreshments in their unique 100-year-old Cambrian carriage.
They were also able to see how the signal box, which is currently undergoing restoration, work, at the railway's first ever open day, which ran between 10am to 6pm.
Andrew Bunyard, marketing manager for the railway, said: "From our point of view, it has been a great success.
"It has been really busy considering we were competing with the FA Cup final. We set our time table in August last year, so that is the way it is.
"We have gained a few more people, who said they wanted to get involved, which was one of the aims of the day. So it has also been successful on that front."
Mr Bunyard said around 150 families had visited the open day.
The line, which originally opened in 1872, was closed by British Railways in 1989.
So the Chinnor and Princes Risborough Railways Association bought the line five years later for £125,000.
The first volunteer-run trains started that year and since then the railway has grown to carry more than 15,000 passengers a year on its diesel and steam trains.
The trains run every Sunday for more than three-and-a-half miles, through the scenic countryside from Chinnor Station to Thame Junction.
The association is currently appealing for more volunteers to help with their proposed extension, which will extend the line through to Princes Risborough.
Those interested in volunteering, should contact the Railway on 01844 354117.

Its lines like this that linked towns and communities together that we need to get back in action. Until a proper public transport network exists the motor car will remain king and the environment will continue to be damaged.

Tis a shame that I didn't know about this sooner, my sons and I would have enjoyed this day out.
Might just give them a call and volunteer our help..
