THE manager of High Wycombe's other shopping centre has officially confirmed budget clothing store Primark is coming to town.

But eager shoppers will have to wait until September to get their hands on its cut price bargains.

Bill Pollard, manager of the Chilterns, confirmed this week the large two storey unit, formerly occupied by M&S, would be replaced with a new Primark store, due to open at the end of September.

The store, which has entrances inside the Chilterns and off Church Street, has sat empty since M&S moved to the Eden shopping centre in March.

Mr Pollard admitted footfall at the centre had dropped by a third since the new centre's grand launch, but believed Primark's opening would be a great boost for the Chilterns and the town.

He said: "I think it will certainly help this side of town, that's without a doubt. They have a huge following and that you can gauge by the amount of phone calls we have had this week from customers."

"The footfall has slackened off," he added, "I think when you talk to the tenants and staff that are here, life is tough. But then I think if you look at the general climate nationally now, we're no different to anywhere else."

Mr Pollard said his letting agents were talking to "all sorts of people" about filling the empty Next unit and the soon-to-be empty Dorothy Perkins store, which is due to open a new branch inside Eden next Thursday.

But he said he could not confirm who would be moving into the Chilterns next.

This is good news. Let’s hope the new Primark store is a roaring success.

From what I hear it is likely to be selling things more in line with what the people of the town actually want to buy.

Competition for customers against Eden? Ivor will never complain or moan about any new shop opening up anywhere, as long as it is not in Eden. The more customers that go elsewhere, the happier he will be.

i don't think we really need a debenhams , if most people had a choice between a house of fraiser and a debenhams, house f fraiser will always win. Were lucky to have one.

The only promblem with Primark there lines are made for a certain age group 12 to 25, if you like shiny suits , tee shirts with logos and hooded tops then you will love it.

We are so lucky to have house of fraser but to be hounest the prices are so reciculously expensive, i mean like over £200 or higher for a bag, so I think a debenhams would be a greater choice to have in Wycombe, also i agree that tescos needs upgrading in Wycombe, I think Pound stretcher, Lydl or Aldi would be great in Wycombe, then at least we have a bit more of a range of shops.

We've already got enough pound shops thanks, just look at the high street. We have that 99p store, Woolies and an Asian store!

Although choice is a good idea for all us shoppers I do also know how much some of the market traders have suffered since the 99p opened it's doors.

hi becky , pound stretcher , aldi, and lydil are very popular in northern towns who have a high influx of asylum seekers but really does sunny wycombe need that, i mean multi million pound eden and then aldi for a can of beans for 4p. ahh hello. To be fair i do see were your coming from though.

I agree,

They can start at the 99p store, then pop into McDonalds, over to Primark for a pink shell suit, a quick fag outside the Chilterns and then a quick snack in Greggs the bakers, any money left can then be spent in that strange gambling shop on the corner...

Great that Primark is coming to Wycombe, but what about Iceland which we once had in the town? Are they going to bring that back at all?

Upgrade, High Wycombe says...
1:58pm Sun 17 Aug 08

After living in High Wycombe for 12 years its about time the town was upgraded it has been been on a steep downhill slope for several years. The Eden Center is a good start but the stink of fish and rotten food in the old market has not changed. It still stinks and that old market place could be a huge benefit to the town if we just got rid of all the rubbish and dirty traders who dont care about the town. Then we might think about washing 50 years of dirt off the town centre including as a first priority the Ugly Buildings at the entrance to High Wycombe which is our Hospital It will need a lot more than a Primark to change a down market town into a place to be proud of. Drunks hanging out in the underpass is not getting notice so we can expect more of these. They dont add character they just make the town more of a dump. It needs all the citizens to take more pride and then maybe the the Planners and the Council will know we care what the place looks like. And smells like. There is lot of potential and we could start by asking that the town get a good wash and clean up.
